India's White collar Workers Growing Unhappy with Pay

By Vipin Agnihotri

I have a chat with number of India’s white-collar workers in the last ten days or so. One thing, which has come out with this interaction is the fact that they are not very happy. Despite getting high salaries because of shortage of skilled workers, Indian office workers want more from their employers.

90 per cent of the office workers that I interacted with are not happy with their compensation. Interestingly, this trend is not just limited to super-profitable IT companies but also manufacturing companies.

The question now arises: Why are employee expectations surging? In addition, why do they think they ought to be paid more? In my opinion, the main reason behind all this is that workplace in India has become a lot younger. Point to be noted here is that as companies expand, they are going for younger workers at a staggering rate and putting them in responsible positions.

And that is where; younger employees are very different from the older ones. Younger employees seem to have problem in every aspect, be it pay, leadership or even an image of their employers.

All this is not a good sign for employers because unless such employees feel connected with their employer, they will not stay on. To get rid of this situation, it is of utmost importance that employers communicate much better with their younger employees. For example, if the company has experienced a bad quarterly performance there is no point hiding this from the employees, instead explain them why it has happened and how the company is planning to tackle it.

In my opinion, it is quite mandatory that Indian companies get smarter about pay for performance. In other words, just as not every employee contributes equally not every employee should be compensated alike.
