Editor Musings - 25 Most signifcant India events

I came across an amazing compilation of the 25 Most Significant Events in India (After Independence) at the Breaking news blog. It's a very good compilation but it misses a few key events that have forever changed India. First and foremost is Y2K. Y2K you ask? What is the significance of Y2K to India's post independence? Y2K was the catalyst for India's foray into providing BPO services to the US and the rest of the world. Without Y2K, India's ascension on the world stage would have been delayed by a decade or more. Y2K provided the opportunity for India to showcase its programming prowess and to get the Fortune 1000 to focus on cost reduction opportunities in India. Thereafter, India's economy and economic input have grown at an amazing 7-9% second only to China.

The 2nd event not mentioned in the compilation are the 2005 FDI reforms that allow foreigners to invest in India directly under certain conditions. The increase in FDI after the reforms were in place are tremendous and soon India will be seeing the fruits of this reform measure in the form of infrastructure improvements, Class A buildings, better retail and greater inflows of foreign tourists. The India Street has highlighted some of the economic events in this video.
