It’s official; Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata is the global Indian for 2008 according to National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom). It is worth mentioning in this regard that the Global Indian Award is given to an individual who has had an impact on and contributed in some way to the growth of the Indian and global economy.
Nasscom is India’s premier trade body and has around 1050 members, of which around 200 are global companies. In my opinion, Ratan Tata is a class act. I think Ratan Tata have done a first-class job in terms of performance of a steel company.
According to Ratan Tata:
"One hundred years from now, I expect the Tatas to be much bigger than it is now. More importantly, I hope the Group comes to be regarded as being the best in India — best in the manner in which we operate, best in the products we deliver, and best in our value systems and ethics. Having said that, I hope that a hundred years from now we will spread our wings far beyond India..."
Heading the Tata Group since 1991, Ratan Tata at present is the Chairman of Tata Sons, holding company of the Tata Group, and major Group companies including, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Power, Tata Tea, Tata Chemicals, Indian Hotels, Tata Teleservices and Tata AutoComp. Apart from that, he is also Chairman of two of the biggest private sector promoted philanthropic trusts in India. During his tenure, the Group has further expanded its global reach, with its revenues growing over sixfold to Rs 97,000 crore ($21.9 billion).
