Global slowdown: Not a problem for India

By Vipin Agnihotri

In my opinion, Indian capital markets are increasingly taking their cues from global markets. Generally speaking, no sector is completely insulated from the impact of a US and global slowdown, but there are obviously few sectors that are more protected as compared to others.

According to experts, sectors such as textiles, auto ancillaries, IT and pharma, which are quite dependent on US demand, are the ones that investors have to be careful about. It has been noticed that big investors have been pulling money out of stocks that are heavily reliant on US demand. For example, IT at this moment of time is the most underweight stock in the portfolio of big investors.

Point to be noted here is that India’s domestic growth story is still quite robust, making the capital goods, consumer products, banking and financial services, infrastructure and telecom sectors great investment propositions. There are some experts who feel that the impact of the US slowdown has already been discounted in the top-tier IT and pharma companies, which are basically US-dependent.

In my opinion, IT companies such as Wipro, TCS and Infosys Technologies are trading at price-earnings (P/E) multiples of 10 to 13, on the basis of 2010 earnings, and their returns on equity (RoE) and cash flows are strong. Another intriguing thing is that global investors facing a slowdown are likely to have a reduced tendency to take the risk of investing in the Indian real estate sector. However, I am pretty sure that construction companies doing contractual work are good investments.

The pivotal factor here is that as the US slows down, investors there are bound to look at India as an attractive investment destination. Therefore, there is quite a good chance that liquidity will remain strong. ONGC, HPCL, JP Associates, GMR, L&T and NTPC can deliver returns because of their reliance on the domestic economy, which continues to be strong.

Wipro - Lord of the Rings?

By Vipin Agnihotri

It has come into the notice of The India Street that Wipro, the Bangalore headquartered soaps to software company is working overtime to globalize its business and become yet another Indian MNC. Now that Azim Premji has laid a seemingly solid foundation for his $4 billion business, the 62 year old has the responsibility of ensuring that Wipro can metamorphose into a competitive global company.

In my opinion, Wipro has all the right bits in place. In fact, Wipro has purchased 11 companies over the last two years that have boosted its profile in the global IT space. In addition, Premji also entered the domestic business early and has jump-started his two non-IT businesses with big-ticket acquisitions.

No one will argue that Wipro Technologies is well positioned to snap up big IT outsourcing contracts especially after clinching the New Jersey based Infocrossing in a $ 600 million deal. If experts are to be believed, Wipro need to ramp up their key high-value segments such as consulting and BPO business.

Apart from that, third rank of Wipro in the Indian IT industry is in real danger from smaller rivals such as Cognizant Technology Solutions. Both TCS and Infosys Technologies are also trying to build on their existing leads. The good news for Premji is that mostly ignored domestic market has started to pick up momentum and Wipro can hope to net a cool $ 1 billion in business from this stream this year.

Point to be noted here is that Wipro Customer Care and Lighting has only just made its presence felt in the Asia Pacific region. While Premji has firmly said in media that both Consumer Care and Infrastructure Engineering are prominent parts of his business, he may want to rethink this strategy as these businesses start to scale up and it begins to make sense to spin them off into separate companies.

Top 3 Indian Business Personalities in the News

By Vipin Agnihotri

Azim Premji: No fuss punctiliousness

Everyone in Indian business fraternity knows that Azim Premji, 62-year-old Chairman of Wipro is painfully shy of public attention and makes every effort to stay out of the limelight. But in the last few days, Azim Premji is in the glare of publicity for allegedly encroaching on over half an acre of land adjacent to the Belandur Tank, off Bangalore’s Airport Road, purportedly to construct a palm grove and guest house.

As usual, Azim Premji didn’t speak to media in this regard but yes his media managers have issued a press release saying: “Premji bought the land 15 years ago in his private capacity from the government and returned any area that was possibly encroached”.

Just after issuing the press release, Azim Premji ordered his staff to demolish the guest house compound wall. In addition, Premji has returned the land back to the state government.

Vineet Nayar on top of the world

HCL Technologies President Vineet Nayar is on top of the world. After playing a prominent part in the brilliant performance of HCL this year, Harvard Business School has introduced Nayar’s celebrated ‘Employee First, Customer Second’ philosophy as part of its leadership and strategy curriculum.

It is worth mentioning in this regard that students will now study Nayar’s corporate strategy and the subsequent transformation of the HCL in the last two years since he took over. Point to be noted here is that HCL technologies is the only Indian company that has been featured in the London Business School’s annual report on ‘Organizational Innovation’ across 10 notable organizations.

India Economic News Weekly Report, August 3-9, 2007

Courtesy of Sanjay Garg

The biggest economic news of the week by far, at least globally, is the virtual collapse of the sub-prime mortgage market in the U.S. caused by large numbers of people defaulting on their home mortgages. What made it much more worrisome is the uncertainty about who actually holds large chunks of these mortgages and are therefore exposed to a large drop in value. In Germany, Allianz SE revealed today that it has $2.3 billion of exposure to the U.S. subprime market, Deutsche Bank AG lost 30% of the value in its asset-backed securities WDS ABS Fund; WestLB Mellon Asset Management suspended redemptions from its asset-backed securities ABS Fund.

A pool of German banks stepped in this week to shield IKB Industriebank AG from further losses after the lender's Rhinleland Funding Capital Corp. bought 14 billion euros ($19.11 billion) in fixed-income securities — some of them backed by subprime mortgages. The bank's chief executive and chief financial officer have both resigned. French bank BNP Paribas SA announced the suspension of three asset-backed securities funds, saying it could not value them accurately. A number of Australian Hedge Funds are close to a virtual collapse. America's largest home loan lender, Countrywide Financial said yesterday that it is running dangerously short of money and this news caused its shares to fall by 13.8% in Friday pre-market trading.
