For most netizens, Yahoo has been the original portal. Not only has Yahoo been on the web for over a decade is has also offered a wide array of top-notch services. But when people like me entered the realm of social networking, widely been regarded as the next big leap for the Internet, I was quite flabbergasted to see Yahoo missing in action.
Not anymore, Yahoo recently released the beta version of its new social networking site called Yahoo! Mash, a version that seems to be quite different and focuses on personalization.
In my opinion, Yahoo has big market presence at this moment of time. I think their extending into social networking will be a very easy move for them. Yahoo will be giving one more channel for communications and exposure. As a matter of fact, I can easily see 20 to 30 percent using the new channel just for the novelty of it.
At its nucleus, Mash is akin to a new Yahoo profile with a few add ons. Point to be noted here is that Mash has a new concept added, through which any of your friends can edit your profile. This is exactly the case in Wikipedia. In addition, users can go their profiles or their friends by leveraging from a growing gallery of applications as well, and they also allow customization of this service as per need.
The Yahoo Mash service includes features common to Facebook, MySpace, and My Yahoo! The best part about Yahoo Mash is that it provides a special drag and drop style. Modules of Yahoo Mash consist of Flickr RSS, Ego Boost, Common Friends, MyMoshLog2, Blog Module, Asteroids and Astrology.
Over the past one or two years, social networking sites have been all the rage. For example, sites such as MySpace, LinkedIn, Orkut and Facebook have acquired myriad media attention and the term has moved into the lives of almost all netizens.
Hitwise, the segment is dominated by MySpace, which received an overwhelming 79.9 per cent of category visits in April this year. Facebook came a distant second with 11.47 per cent. How Yahoo Mash will turn up will depend largely on how well Yahoo is able to position itself and grab eyeballs.
