Social Networks for Investing - Make money?

I've recently been part of a discussion around the social networking space and investing. In fact we have a very early Facebook application on hot or not stocks application that has drawn a lot of interest. We are finishing our version 2 fantasy stock picking application which will be ready by the first week in May.

The discussion has been around how social networks and investing can work together. As one reader has commented, "This is an interesting question - on a theoretical level, supporting open and transparent markets through a social netoworking flow of information would appear a laudable goal. However, aside the regulatory issues already raisedin other answers (and which are truly non-starters), there are a number of reasons why a single unified "ecosystem" of information is not likely to emerge anytime soon."

I am not an attorney but the regulators should not be getting involved in any peer to peer communication or investment decisions. My right to information from my network is my right and should not be regulated. Moreover, if I am simply measuring how my network responds to information in the public marketplace then how is that different than traders on the floor?

I think a social network play in the investment world will happen. It's a matter of defining an eco-system that works for all investment participants. It's also an eco-system that can level the playing field for te average investor that does not have the resources of the major investment houses. Also, one's network may have more actionable information at the ground level of a company (may be my network has a lot of employees at Oracle and I know they are selling due to issues with the company) then an analyst does at the big investment houses.

What are your thoughts?

Yahoo! Mash: New social networking site of Yahoo

By Vipin Agnihotri

For most netizens, Yahoo has been the original portal. Not only has Yahoo been on the web for over a decade is has also offered a wide array of top-notch services. But when people like me entered the realm of social networking, widely been regarded as the next big leap for the Internet, I was quite flabbergasted to see Yahoo missing in action.

Not anymore, Yahoo recently released the beta version of its new social networking site called Yahoo! Mash, a version that seems to be quite different and focuses on personalization.

In my opinion, Yahoo has big market presence at this moment of time. I think their extending into social networking will be a very easy move for them. Yahoo will be giving one more channel for communications and exposure. As a matter of fact, I can easily see 20 to 30 percent using the new channel just for the novelty of it.

At its nucleus, Mash is akin to a new Yahoo profile with a few add ons. Point to be noted here is that Mash has a new concept added, through which any of your friends can edit your profile. This is exactly the case in Wikipedia. In addition, users can go their profiles or their friends by leveraging from a growing gallery of applications as well, and they also allow customization of this service as per need.

The Yahoo Mash service includes features common to Facebook, MySpace, and My Yahoo! The best part about Yahoo Mash is that it provides a special drag and drop style. Modules of Yahoo Mash consist of Flickr RSS, Ego Boost, Common Friends, MyMoshLog2, Blog Module, Asteroids and Astrology.

Over the past one or two years, social networking sites have been all the rage. For example, sites such as MySpace, LinkedIn, Orkut and Facebook have acquired myriad media attention and the term has moved into the lives of almost all netizens.

Hitwise, the segment is dominated by MySpace, which received an overwhelming 79.9 per cent of category visits in April this year. Facebook came a distant second with 11.47 per cent. How Yahoo Mash will turn up will depend largely on how well Yahoo is able to position itself and grab eyeballs.

Top 5 India Social Networking Sites

Like we have done with our other traffic ranking articles we examine the traffic trends for social networking sites that primarily target an Indian audience. In all the social networking phenomenon in India is small compared to the US (Indian social networking websites today claim a user base of around 3 million registered users) while MySpace, which has 106 million users and Orkut which has 67 million have far greater numbers.

Clearly, Indian firms have a lot of work ahead of them in order to catch up. However, Siddhartha Roy, CEO, BigAdda, says optimistically: “We are early on the curve.” Alok Mittal, MD, Canaan Partners, a venture capital firm, says: “When you put that in context, Indian social networking websites are in their infancy. The break-even point is longer, but once they attain a critical mass of 40 million users, then VC firms will start investing in them.”

Navin Mittal, CEO, fropper.com, says: “With the Indian Internet user-base negligible compared to the US or China, these are very early days.”

The owner of the blog Trak.in does a great job of explaining the benefits of social networking for India and what it means for consumers and businesses.

As you can see below, of the top 5 India social networking sites, bharatstudent.com is ahead in traffic but has not gained much in market share for the past 6 months. While bigadda.com in the last 60 days has had a tremendous increase in traffic launching it to 2nd place (notice our traffic graph is a 3 month average while the line graph shows day by day traffic). Indianpad.com has stayed steady while fropper.com has slipped a little. Yaari’s traffic has been up and down and is currently at a low point.

Traffic Rank
bharatstudent.com 2285
Fropper.com 9506
indianpad.com 4352
yaari.com 33538
bigadda.com 13365
