PICTURES: GMR Rajiv Gandhi Hyderabad Airport Latest Update

As we have reported in the past the new Rajiv Gandhi Hyderabad Airport is the best designed India airport and far sexier than its Bangalore cousin. As you can see from the pictures below, the airport is nearly operational and the airport authority is claiming the first flight will land in March. The list of airlines flying in and out of Hyderabad reads like the whose who of international aviation. The airport will certainly make a statement to those that have had to land in an unwelcoming and drabby airport in the past. It's a step infrastructure wise in the right direction and we applaud its completion next month.

According to GMR, the Passenger Terminal Building Works is nearly complete
Roof structure and external envelope works substantially complete.
Most of Electrical & Mechanical systems are in final stages of installation and Testing, Commissioning & Integration is in progress.
For ATC Complex, finishing works are in progress and 98% of works completed.
Internal Finishing works for Passenger Terminal building in progress.
Overall 95% of works completed on Passenger Terminal Building.
Civil works for various concessionaire areas are in progress.

The Hyderabad airport project seems to be on track for an April 2008 opening. Of all the airports we have studied here, Hyderabad’s seems to be the one closest to meeting its proposed opening date. I’ve also observed that the roads leading to and from the airport are very flat and smooth as compared to the other photos I have seen around the other India airports we have studied (see picture below). In fact, throughout the country the roads are not smooth or flat due to inadequate equipment. With the new import restrictions loosening, hopefully India will build smoother roads.
