Self Appraisal

In my previous article, Psychology of investing and trading we classified the investors as short term, medium term and long term. Since July 2007, we picked several stocks for short, medium and long term investment. We have also pointed out that some stocks are bearish. Let us now review these stocks.

Though the “short term” investors may hold the stocks for few days to few weeks, the ultimate duration depends on their profit margin, risk profile etc. However, a holding time of 21 sessions i.e. one calender month can be considered “short term”.

The India Street short term picks and their highest returns (on close basis) are given in the following table. Due to space constraints only scrip code, close price on date of analysis, highest close price and percentage returns are given. The full list of these articles are available here.

It can be seen that out of 35 stocks discussed, the ‘true’ failures are Everest Industries, SRF, Parsvnath and TVS Motors. There is nothing technically wrong with these stocks. Investors with a little more patience (holding the stock for more than one month) might have gained better in other stocks. That said, we have a success rate of 89% in our short term picks during last four months.

We once again reiterate that technical analysis is all about probabilities; there are no certainties. No one can clearly predict which stock will rally on a given day. The best thing an investor can do in case of a failure is to accept it and get out of the stock. This should be used as a learning experience.

Buy These 5 Stocks and Forget about them

Analysis of select India stocks (long term perspective)

By Sundaramurthy Vadivelu

Disclosure

In my earlier article, “Psychology of investing and trading” we discussed about long term investing. The long term investors (Rakesh Jhunjhunwala as an example) have a distinct advantage over others in the sense they need not follow the market every day or week. People with busy schedules, NRI’s, etc. can be long term investors. As the name implies, one has to hold the stock for a year or more, depending on his risk profile and profit margin.

Let us now analyze the following stocks from a long term perspective.

Note: I received a few queries about using technical indicators on charts. The indicators (leading as well as lagging) can be useful in confirming a particular pattern. The primary focus is on price action, chart patterns, candlestick patterns, supports, resistances etc. Indicators alone cannot be used for investing or trading since these are derived using various formulae from open, high, low, close and volume.

Chambal Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited:

This company is a part of K.K. Birla group and was promoted in 1985 by Zuari Industries Limited. Chambal operates two nitrogenous fertilizer plants and has the largest private sector fertilizer complex in India. The combined capacity of the two plants is around 1.73 million tonnes of urea per year. It caters to the northern and western regions of India and supplies urea to nine states. The company has also entered into food processing, textiles and software. Its main product urea is marked under the brand name “Uttam Veer”.

The company’s net profit for the financial year 2006 – 07 was Rs.151 crores while for the previous year it was Rs.203 crores.

http://groups.google.com/group/theindiastreet/web/CHAMBLFERT.jpg

In the monthly chart shown above, it can be seen that the stock took nearly 11 years to break its previous high at 39.50. But the breakout was not accompanied with good volumes. The stock had declined since February 2006 and did not break its support trendline. This month it has closed above its short term resistance at 46.80 with record volumes. The stock has already retraced from a low of 27 in July 2006 to a high of 54 this month. The long term target for the stock will be 71 and 91.

Gitanjali Gems Limited:

Gitanjali Gems Limited is an integrated diamond and jewellery manufacturing company. Its products are marketed under the brand names ‘Asmi’ and ‘Gili’. The product list includes rings, pendants, ear rings, two stones, colour stones etc. Computer aided design and manufacturing are used in the production of jewellery. Its manufacturing facility is located at Andheri, Mumbai.

The company became public last year when it came out with an IPO at a price of Rs.195.

The company declared a net profit of Rs.82 crores for the financial year 2006 – 07.

http://groups.google.com/group/theindiastreet/web/GITANJALI.jpg

The response to the IPO in the secondary market was not an overwhelming one, as it lost about Rs.24 during March 2006. It did however manage to touch a high of 267 in May. During the heavy fall in the index between May and June last year, this stock too was not spared – it fell to a low of 108.20. On the above chart, watch the waves marked 1, 2 and 3. Apparently wave 3 is in progress. During the corrective wave 2 it never really closed below 50% retracement at 186.15, which is a sign of healthy bull market. This month it has broken its resistance at 267 and closed above it. The longer term target for the stock, when calculated from a low of 177.10 works out to 464.

Honda Siel Power Products Limited:

Honda Siel Power Products Limited (formerly Shriram Honda Power Equipment Limited) specializes in manufacture of 4 stroke portable generators, water pumps, engines & lawnmowers. It is a joint venture between Honda Motor Co. Japan and Siel Ltd., with 67% equity stake of Honda Motor Co. Japan.

The company declared a net profit of Rs.17.38 crores for the financial year 2006 – 07.

http://groups.google.com/group/theindiastreet/web/HONDAPOWER.jpg

In the monthly chart shown above, the stock had a “Triangle breakout” last month with huge volumes. The triangle height works out to 108.90. This when added to the triangle top of 210.95 gives a target of 319.85. Minor resistance at 249.40 has been broken but the stock has not closed above it. The next resistance for the stock will be its previous high of 348 made during September 1997 (Readers might now realize how much time it may take for a stock to come back to a particular level). Once 348 is breached, the stock may touch 408.

Malu Paper Mills Limited:

Malu Paper Mills Limited is promoted by the “The Malu Family” and all its directors are from the family; They are first generation entrepreneurs. This group has business interests in coal and lignite trading , manufacturing and trading of MS electrodes, manganese processing and exports, MS Ingots and castings.

The group has set up two paper manufacturing units at Nagpur. The units have a capacity of 8,250 tonnes per year of kraft paper and 19,800 tonnes per year of newsprint. The company declared a net profit of Rs.3.56 crores for the financial year 2006 – 07.

http://groups.google.com/group/theindiastreet/web/MALUPAPER.jpg

The stock, with an IPO price of 30, was not initially well received in the secondary market. But it still managed to reach a high of 44.15 during December 2006. In the above chart, watch the price and volume decline simultaneously. This is an indication of bullishness. Currently wave 3 is in progress. Last month the stock had broken its resistance at 44.15 and closed above it. A bullish “Three outside up” candlestick pattern can be seen in the chart. It is particularly significant in medium and long term charts. The stock can be expected to reach a target of 75 in the long term.

MSP Steel and Power Limited:

The company manufactures sponge iron (200,000 MT/year), mild steel billets/ingots (100,000 MT/year), TMT bars (90,000 MT/year,thermomechanically treated), ferro alloy products, industrial and medical oxygen. A power plant of 24 MW capacity is located at Raigarh. The group has manufacturing facilities in the states of West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. The company declared a net profit of Rs.7.1 crores for the quarter ended June 2007.

http://groups.google.com/group/theindiastreet/web/MSPL.jpg

The stock was issued at an price of Rs.10 during July 2005. It touched a low of 8 during June 2006. Between May and June 2006 when many stocks lost more than 30% to 40% this stock lost ony 12%. Last month, it broke its resistance at 21.10 and closed above it. The longer term target for the stock is Rs.40. It is to be noted that correction, if any, in the stock should be used only as opportunity to enter long positions. Support exists at 21.10 which is its previous high as well as 38.2% retracement level.

5 Reasons to be Bullish in the Long Run

India stocks (long term perspective)

Disclosure

In this article let us discuss some stocks which are interesting from a long term perspective. As we have seen my previous articles, “long term” means a holding time of at least a year or more. The stocks are chosen from either A group or B1 group of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The analysis is based on monthly charts.

Hitachi Home and Life Solutions (India) Limited:

Hitachi Home & Life Solutions (India) Limited is a subsidiary of Hitachi Home & Life Solutions Inc., Japan. 69.90% stake is being held by the promotors. The Ahmedabad based company is a leading manufacturer of air conditioners, refrigerators and fully automatic washing machines. The company’s net profit was Rs.19.33 crores for the financial year 2006 – 07.

http://groups.google.com/group/theindiastreet/web/HITACHIHOM.JPG

The stock made a high of 124.85 in August 2005. It has been in some zig zag pattern since then. After 24 months of consolidation it has broken out with reasonably good volumes (in fact more volumes than at its previous peak). In January 2007 the stock actually broke its previous high; but didn’t close above it and volumes were not encouraging either. The long term targets for the stock is 208 and 260. Good support exists at 100.

Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited:

The company’s natural gas based urea plant with a capacity of 1.2 million tonnes per year is located at Kakinada, a port town in the state of Andhra Pradesh on east coast of India. Natural gas is drawn from Krishna – Godavari basin. The company plans to expand the capacity to 1.7 million tonnes soon. Product range includes urea, anhydrous ammonia, diammonium phosphate (DAP), Muriate of Potash, hydrates of zinc sulphate and speciality fertilizers. It declared a net profit of Rs.31.71 crores in 2006 – 07, more than 50% down from its previous year’s figure of Rs.66.86 crores.

http://groups.google.com/group/theindiastreet/web/NAGARFERT.JPG

This stock witnessed a bullish breakout in May 2007 almost after two and a half years. The volume was a record high as can be seen in the chart. When it broke the previous resistance in November 2004 the volumes were pretty good. This is another factor which makes the stock more interesting. Though there had been some hiccups in between, it has finally broken out. The stock has a good support around 18.25. The long term target works out to 39.

PSL Limited:

We discussed about this stock in my earlier article “India Street Analyst - India Stock Upgrades and Downgrades – Part 1”.

PSL Limited has expertise in the design, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of plants, machinery and equipments catering to the pipeline industry. It is one of the largest pipe manufacturers in India with 10 pipe mills at strategically coast based locations in Chennai, Kandla and Daman with an annual capacity exceeding 1 million metric tonnes of size varying from 16" dia to 120" diameter with wall thickness from 5mm to 25mm. The company’s net profit stood at Rs.62.16 crores for the financial year 2006 – 07.

http://groups.google.com/group/theindiastreet/web/PSL_Monthly.JPG

The stock has appreciated from a low of 29.70 in October 2002 to a high of 312 in January 2006. A correction, equivalent to 38.2% retracement occurred. Though it managed to break 50% retracement, never closed below it. This month it has witnessed a powerful bullish breakout with decent volumes. The long term target for the stock works out to 474.

PTC India Limited:

In India, each state has its own demand – supply scenario for power which sometimes could be seasonal. While one state is on a deficit some other state may generate excess power. PTC India Limited (formerly known as Power Trading Corporation of India Limited), was set up to act as an entity which could undertake trading of power to achieve economic efficiency and security of supply. PTC acts as an intermediate by buying power from the generation projects and sell to multiple power utilities and other buyers. It declared a net profit of Rs.35.09 crores for the financial year 2006 – 07.

http://groups.google.com/group/theindiastreet/web/PTC.JPG

The chart displayed above shows the valiant attempt to break resistance on 4 occasions before a breakout occurred this month. These are marked 1,2,3 and 4 on the chart. It can be noted that even though the stock managed to close above resistance levels, it could not move up further due to lack of volumes. There is no hard and fast rule about this, but surpassing at least 75% of the previous peak’s highest volume gives the stock better chance of sustaining the breakout. Now that this has happened, we can expect targets of 122 and 155.

Union Bank of India:

Union Bank of India has the proud distinction of being flagged off by Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. It is a public sector unit with 55.43% share capital held by the Government of India. The bank came out with its Initial Public Offer (IPO) in August, 2002 and Follow on Public Offer in February 2006. The bank’s net profit was Rs.84.54 crores for the financial year 2006 – 07.

http://groups.google.com/group/theindiastreet/web/UNIONBANK.JPG

The stock has become bullish on long term charts this month, by breaking its previous high at 143 with volumes. It has taken almost 2 years for the consolidation pattern to get over. The stock had formed a “double top” as can be seen in the chart. Now that it is broken, we can expect targets of 243 and 324 in future. In my previous article “5 Great Long Term India Stock Buys” published last month, we discussed about DENABANK and “triple top” formation eventually getting broken. Chart patterns and candlestick patterns form vital part of technical analysis and it is essential to examine these first, before analyzing other criteria.

Feeling Bullish - India Stock Market Weekly Review

Disclosure

Bulls make merry as Indices continue to rally!

In the last weekly review I had mentioned, “This week was an interesting one and now we have the confirmation that the bulls are back on track”.

This view was found correct as the indices were on a roll this week. The Nifty gained 61.50 points (1.37%) on weekly basis. Except for a minor correction of 15.40 points on Tuesday the index closed positive on all four remaining days. But the major rally was witnessed on Thursday as the index soared by 62.55 points. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday Nifty remained almost flat with gains of 7.60, 2.80 and 3.95 points respectively. The Nifty closed at 4566.

On Tuesday and Wednesday there were two candlesticks with ‘doji’ bodies. In my earlier article “Candlestick patterns in Indian stock markets” we discussed about single and multiple candlestick patterns and their use. A doji represents indecision among traders. ‘Doji’ candle’s open and close prices are same (or nearly the same). But the real body should be almost in the middle of the candlestick range. Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s candlesticks though, had a “doji” body meaning open and close were almost the same. But on Tuesday the real body was found below the middle of the candlestick range. On Wednesday it was above the midpoint. The long upper shadow on Tuesday indicated a sell off; it was reflected in Wednesday’s trade for the first 4 hours. During the last hour of trade the bulls had managed to close positive, though the gain was a meagre one. This is seen from the long lower shadow of the candlestick on Wednesday. In other words the bears tried to push the market down on Wednesday; but the bulls managed to push the index up. As a result we saw a rally on Thursday.

But that was a short lived one. Today Nifty has once again formed a ‘doji’ body with a long upper shadow similar to that of Tuesday, signifying selling pressure. Both daily and intra day chart of nifty are shown below. Today’s trading session has been a weak one, though with a small gain. The day, though opening higher, formed lower highs and lower lows continuously. The last hour of trade witnessed sell off as indicated on the chart. This means that the market is witnessing profit booking at higher levels. Going by this chart, we may see further corrections next week. But those corrections will be good for the index and the overall market.

However, we still maintain our bullish view on medium and long term trends on the index.

Several index stocks are at a life time high. These include Bharti Airtel, Gas Authority of India, Grasim, Indian Petrochemicals Corporation, Larsen & Toubro, Reliance Communications and Reliance Industries. Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum are bearish in short term charts.
